Was a bit impulsive and crazy last night and decided to drive back to Chicago-area after the NSAI pitch-to-publisher event in Nashville (big howdy to a few of the other writers I had a chance to meet last night: Mark Box, Harry James and Sarah Popejoy).
Pulled into my driveway at 3:45am this morning (about an eight hour drive). Some observations — there are OODLES of cars and trucks on I65 between midnight and 3:00am; Pilot Gas has adequate coffee and overpriced Twinkies; I discovered the best way to stay awake is to have very loud conversations with myself and scream at the top of my lungs during those few moments everything just becomes a blur… Awww, don’t worry, I was safe!
This time around, I was demo-ing a couple of Christmas songs to present to Carol and crew to plug. I know, weird doing Christmas tunes in July! Anyway, George Clinton and the boys at Bayou Recording were awesome… Ronnie Kimball did the vocal for “Dearest Mary” (actually, changing name of song to “Rockin’ the Light (Dearest Mary)”). What can I say, I dig Ronnie’s voice and also his laid-back vibe coupled with utter professionalism. I know it’s not Christmas, but what the heck — you can listen for yourself: “Rockin’ the Light (Dearest Mary)”- featuring Ronnie Kimball.
Also recorded “You are My Holiday” with Gary Earl at his studio and we got that bouncy, Christmas-y feel I was shooting for. His wife Robin is a vocal coach and was there for my vocal session as well; that was different for me and it was nice to have the input regarding phrasing, etc. during the production phase. So, I got a great demo and Gary and Robin were turned on to “Miss May’s Nut and Fruit Crunch” which I recently discovered (man, that’s tasty stuff)!
At the top of the post, I mentioned the NSAI Pitch-to-Publisher night, and that went okay; always an education, these events. Met the absolutely fabulous HUG LADY!! Last count, she’s over 37,000 hugs and still hugging strong! What a delight and she TOTALLY MADE MY DAY! She’s got it right and she’s embracing her calling — what a love-bug. With that, here’s a big ****HUG**** for you, my friend. Hope your day is unfolding with lots of light and love.
Sitting here on my front porch fiddlin’ with a little gadget I just picked up on Ebay — a Sony Mylo. About the size of a T-Mobile Sidekick, Mylo connects to an available wifi network and allows you to send email, use it as a phone (with your Skype account), instant message, listen to music… and more. In fact, I’m using right now to post this blog entry!
I’m without my laptop right now; had to send my Vaio in for repair (uh, yup, I do have an affinity for Sony products).
Speaking of WiFi… We currently have cellular plan with Sprint but the new “Hotspot @ Home” plan at T-Mobile is enticing. With H@H, your phone switches seemlessly between the T-Mobile network and any open wifi network when available. Wifi calls don’t use any of your plan minutes so you can save a boatload! Anyone on this plan? Let me know what you think of it.
As you can tell, I’m starting with a clean slate — that’ right, got a brand-spankin’ new blog(site) for ya! The new blog’s name caused Jordan to wince and Parker to shake his head and sigh… but I think it’s cute!
Early next week I’ll be back in Nashville to work on some Christmas demos. I’ll be recording “You are My Holiday” with Gary Earl at his studio and doing “Dearest Mary” with George Clinton over at Bayou Recording. For DM, we have the fabulous Ronnie Kimball coming in to do the vocal. I’ll let you know how it all goes.
Why the demos, you ask? Well, I’m excited to report that I just recently signed with Springbarrel Songwriter Services. Carol Perdew and crew at SSS will be”pitching” portions of my song catalog. Their job is to present songs to artists, producers, etc. who are currently seeking songs for recording projects. Nifty, huh!?!?
Well, that’s all for now. Will try to be more regular with updates with this new blog.
